Athens is a spectacular city. The Acropolis and all the major archaeological sites are within easy walking distance downtown. A modern subway system and good bus service can get you to wherever you need to go. As for eating . . . there are so many wonderful outdoor restaurants to choose from. When I first visited the Acropolis as a young man in 1971 I was free to wander within the interior of the Parthenon. Not anymore--now major restoration work is underway and the interior is off limits. At first I was sad to see so much scaffolding hiding this wonder of the world. But thinking more deeply, I am pleased to see so much effort being put into restoring this architectural masterpiece. This will be a multi-generational project with artisans working lovingly on a project whose completion they will not live long enough to see. Hurrah to such dedication!
