Crete is a vast island with mythic destinations in every direction. Our visit lasted only five days so we concentrated on visiting the central and west parts of the island. Among the archaeological highlights were the Minoan palaces of Knossos and Phaistos, and the extraordinary museum in Iraklion. Crete is also a land of natural wonders and fabulous beaches. We had time to sample onlya few: Matala, Khania, and an unexpected visit to Elephonisi in the extreme southwest corner. If one had to be restricted to one island in Greece, Crete would get my vote. The variety of things to see and do there are unmatched.
